Experience 'Heads I Win Tails You Lose' by David Devlin

'Heads I Win Tails You Lose' by David Devlin is a masterclass in impromptu mentalism, delivering a truly astonishing prediction effect that will leave your audience speechless. This isn't just another coin trick; it's a deeply engaging piece of psychological artistry, inspired by Max Maven's classic 'Positive/Negative', refined and enhanced for today's discerning performer. Imagine being able to predict not only which invisible coin a spectator will choose, but also whether it lands 'heads' or 'tails' – all under fair, impossible conditions.

The Powerful Effect

The routine begins with you placing a single business card or small opaque object on the table, declaring a prediction lies beneath it. You then introduce three imaginary coins – say, a nickel, a quarter, and a dime – laying them out in a row. A spectator is invited to use their imagination to select any one coin. Let's assume they pick the 'quarter'. They're then asked to mentally flip this invisible quarter and call out 'heads' or 'tails'. Whatever they choose, the moment of truth arrives. The cover is lifted, revealing not just a quarter, but the *exact* quarter they imagined, often with a special mark proving you knew their choice from the very start. The precision and impossibility of this prediction are simply breathtaking.

Why This Routine Stands Out

David Devlin's approach to this mentalism powerhouse is remarkable for its deceptive simplicity and clean execution. Unlike many similar effects, 'Heads I Win Tails You Lose' boasts several critical advantages: there are no switches of any kind, only one prediction is ever used, nothing is written down, and absolutely no gimmicks are involved. This means everything you use – a common coin, a Sharpie, and a small cover – can be thoroughly examined and even given away as an unforgettable souvenir. The method is 99% impromptu, requiring only these readily available items, making it perfect for spontaneous performances. There's no sleight of hand to learn, ensuring a smooth, confident presentation every time.

Perfect for Any Performance Setting

The versatility of 'Heads I Win Tails You Lose' is unparalleled. Whether you're performing intimate close-up magic at a private gathering, mingling during table hopping, engaging crowds with street magic, or even captivating a larger audience on stage, this routine adapts flawlessly. Its directness and the strong connection it builds with the spectator make it a memorable experience. It's a genuine workhorse for any mentalist or magician looking for an effect that truly packs a punch without relying on complex apparatus or lengthy setups.

Original Specs

Heads I Win Tails You Lose by David Devlin

A really strong piece of mentalism that is impromptu and can be performed literally in every single performing situation is not too easy to find. This, however, fits the bill beautifully.

Effect: The mentalist places a business card onto the table. The audience is told that there is a prediction underneath the business card, but that it will not be shown to them until later. The performer reaches into his pocket (or wherever) and brings out three invisible coins: a nickel, a quarter, and a dime. The spectator is told to imagine that she sees them. The performer lays the imaginary coins in a row on the table.

The spectator uses her imagination to select one of the coins. Let's say she selects the quarter. She then, using her imagination, flips the invisible quarter into the air. She then calls out whether the quarter landed heads or tails side up. Say she picks heads. The card is then removed, and underneath the card is a quarter! Not only that, but the quarter is marked to prove that the mentalist knew the outcome of the coin toss from the beginning!

This is David's beautiful approach to Max Maven's "Positive/Negative". Several changes have been made from the original routine. The features include:

  • No switches of any kind

  • Only one prediction

  • Nothing is written

  • No gimmicks of any kind

  • 99% impromptu (all you need is any kind of cover such as a card or an opaque tumbler, any coin, and a Sharpie Marker)

  • Nothing is stolen away

  • Nothing is hidden

  • Absolutely everything is examinable and ungimmicked

  • Everything may be given away to the spectator to keep

  • Perfect for walk around, table hopping, formal close up, and even on STAGE!

  • No sleight of hand whatsoever

  • Only one coin is under the cover

You are going to love this and use is every chance you get!
