Immerse yourself in a truly unique piece of magical history with this digitally preserved 2-hour lecture from the esteemed Mike Bornstein. Originally recorded from a rare VHS tape in 1989, this exclusive digital download offers an unparalleled opportunity to learn from a master. Mike Bornstein, known by his stage name 'Kolma' during his peak as a popular nightclub performer in the 1940s, was celebrated for his manipulative act and his innovative contributions to the world of magic. Beyond the stage, Bornstein was a prolific manufacturer, creator, lecturer, and a staunch supporter of the magic community, often being the first to welcome and mentor new members in New York City's IBM and SAM organizations.

Unearth Rare & Groundbreaking Magic

This lecture tape is an exceedingly rare find, with only a fleeting mention of its existence found after extensive searching. Now, for the first time in an accessible digital format, you can delve into Bornstein's brilliant mind. The 2-hour session is 'jam-packed' with a 'huge amount' of practical magic ideas spanning cards, coins, paper money, and much more. Bornstein's passion for 'gimmicks & gadgets' shines through, offering ingenious solutions that are often surprisingly simple to create. While he sometimes leaves room for your own ingenuity in the details, he provides enough inspiration for you to 'figure it out for yourself.' For instance, he briefly demonstrates an early version of his 'Zoom Zoom Deck' and explains how its core 'trick' can be sourced from any hardware store. You'll also learn several of his best and most inventive paper money effects, many relying on his signature gimmicks.

Techniques for Every Magician

Beyond his innovative gimmicks, Bornstein was also a highly 'competent sleight-of-handster.' This lecture is a rich blend of both approaches, ensuring there's something valuable for every magician, regardless of their preferred style. While Bornstein's strong Bronx accent can be 'a little hard to understand at times,' even for native English speakers, don't let this minor detail deter you. The sheer volume of 'great magic' presented makes this a truly worthwhile experience. This digital download, preserved from its original VHS source, reflects the authentic quality of its era. While the audio level is intentionally loud for clarity, remember to adjust your volume to avoid 'frying your ears.' This is a raw, genuine look into the mind of a magic innovator.

The Legacy of Mike Bornstein

Bornstein is perhaps best known as the inventor of numerous routines using paper money, including his most famous creation, the 'Floating Dollar Bill.' This lecture is a testament to his inventive spirit and his dedication to advancing the art of magic. By exploring this rare footage, you're not just learning tricks; you're connecting with the legacy of a man who profoundly influenced many and whose creative genius continues to inspire. This digital download isn't just a collection of effects; it's a historical document, a masterclass in magical invention, and an essential resource for serious students of the craft.

Original Specs

This is a 2-hour video, ripped from a VHS tape, of a lecture given by Mike Bornstein in 1989.
Bornstein was a very popular nightclub performer in the 1940s where he presented a manipulative act using the stage name "Kolma." He is best known as the inventor of many routines using paper money. In addition to being a manufacturer, creator, lecture and performer he was an active supporter of both IBM and SAM organizations in New York City where he was the first person to welcome and befriend new members and guests -- many of which now consider him their mentor. His most popular creation was the "Floating Dollar Bill."
This lecture tape seems to be exceedingly rare. I was able to find only one very brief mention in over 40 pages of Internet search results that this was ever even offered to the magic community at one time.
The lecture is jam-packed with tons of magic ideas with cards, coins, paper money & more. Bornstein loved gimmicks & gadgets, and this lecture reflects that. Most of the gimmicks he describes are easily made, though he doesn't always provide a lot of detail. He does give you enough of an idea that if you play around with things you'll be able to figure it out for yourself. (For example, he does a "throwaway" bit near the beginning of the lecture with what later became known as his "Zoom Zoom Deck" and mentions that the "trick" can be purchased in any hardware store. Several of his best effects with paper money which rely on gimmicks are also explained.)
Bornstein also was a competent sleight-of-handster, and there are a number of effects based on those approaches, too.
Bornstein had a strong Bronx accent & can be a little hard to understand at times, even if English is your native language - but don't let that deter you: there's huge amount of great magic on this video.
Usual provisions apply about the quality of this rip: it likely could be better, but given my lack of knowledge, you get what you get. Audio level is very loud, so be sure to turn it down if you don't wanna fry your ears.
